An Appropriate Adult is an impartial third-party who is called upon by the Royal Gibraltar Police or HM Customs to offer specialised assistance to young persons who have been detained. The experience of being detained by law enforcement can be a frightening one for young people, particularly if their parents are not available or are unwilling to be present. In recognition of this, Childline Gibraltar established its Appropriate Adult service for children and young people in 2008.
Under the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act of 2011, it is the responsibility of custody sergeants to ensure that an Appropriate Adult is present to safeguard the welfare, interests and rights of children and young persons who are detained or questioned by police officers. Appropriate Adults provide a vital support to young people who are being interviewed as suspects, ensuring that they fully understand the process and are treated in a fair and just manner. Through this service, Childline Gibraltar is committed to promoting the wellbeing and protection of young people in Gibraltar.
