Childline supports Children’s Mental Health Week 2017

Press release

Childline Gibraltar is proud to support Children’s Mental Health Week 2017 (6-12 February).

The Week is hosted by children’s mental health charity Place2Be, who support pupils, families and teachers in schools across the UK. During the Week, Childline Gibraltar will be promoting awareness about children’s mental health issues and emotional difficulties via their social media pages and hosting an exhibition of competition entries submitted by local schoolchildren on the topic of mental health.

Echoing Dame Esther Rantzen’s words, a spokesperson for the local charity noted “We must not only understand how to encourage young people to speak about their unhappiness, and treat these conditions more effectively, but also face up to the reality that far too many of our children seem to be struggling alone and in despair. Those young people we speak to tell us that they cannot talk to anyone else, there is nobody in their lives to confide in, except Childline.”

The local charity’s statistics from last year show that a third of service users contacted them about a mental health issue, with a notable rise in calls on self-harm and from those experiencing suicidal thoughts.

If you would also like to get involved and support the campaign, Place2Be has created helpful advice and resources for parents and carers which you can find on their website: or contact

International Volunteer Day 2016

To all of our amazing Volunteers,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to say a special thank you for the voluntary hours you give to Childline Gibraltar. On International Volunteer Day, we celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism and we know that our charity would not function without the contribution that you all make in your own way.

In the last year alone, we have helped almost 400 people via our Helpline, almost 50 juveniles via our Appropriate Adult service and we’ve reached more than 2,000 young people through our various educational projects. All of this takes tremendous efforts and team work and it is thanks to all of you that we have been able to have such an impact within the Gibraltar community.

The other week, a young girl approached our Chocolate Tombola stall at the Convent Christmas Fair and bought a number of tickets with her pocket money. When the volunteers on the stall joked with her that she wouldn’t have any money left if she kept buying tickets, her response was that Childline had helped so many of her friends, so she wanted to help Childine. This is the reality we face – many children have come to depend on our services and we continue to strive to be there for anyone who needs us. Thanks to you, we are able to develop and expand knowing that we are supported by a passionate, dedicated group of individuals who share our vision to end cruelty to children in Gibraltar.

I take this opportunity to wish you and your families well over the holiday season and I look forward to meeting you all during 2017.

Thank you once again for making that difference.

Warmest regards

Jo Abergel
