An Appropriate Adult (AA) is an independent third party, called in by the Royal Gibraltar Police or HM Customs to provide special assistance to detained juveniles.
A detained juvenile is by law a ‘vulnerable person’ and it is therefore a legal requirement that an adult is present when a juvenile is being interviewed by the police. Generally, this adult will be a parent or a guardian, but when neither of them is able to be present, Childline Gibraltar provides specially trained volunteers to support and assist the detained juvenile.
Childline Gibraltar has been providing this service since 2008 and we have seen an increase in the demand for the service over the years. The service is available 24/7, every day of the year and is delivered by volunteers under the direction of the Duty Manager. A local lawyer provides legal advice to the Appropriate Adult volunteers on a pro bono basis.
Childline Gibraltar is a member of the National Appropriate Adult Network for England and Wales.
